Il libro

This collective volume is published to accompany the thirtyfourth International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens, dedicated to Hospitalfield, a place that embodies the hospitality rooted in its history, with newly inhabited spaces, carefully tended gardens and programmes devoted to contemporary art and education, proud both of its place in the Scottish landscape and the welcome it extends to its inhabitants and of belonging to the international milieu that witnessed its birth and continues to support it.
Founded on the east coast of Scotland by a monastic community at the beginning of the 13th century, Hospitalfield is now an ‘artists’ house’, an evolving project in which the confines between nature and art, architecture and landscape intertwine and are exploited through the active involvement of artists and local inhabitants exploring new instruments and modes of expression. Faithful to the vision of its founder, the nineteenth century artist Patrick Allan-Fraser, Hospitalfield is now run by the Patrick Allan-Fraser of Hospitalfield Trust, with Lucy Byatt, its director since 2012. Key roles in the recent renovation of the gardens and buildings of Hospitalfield have been entrusted to the landscape designer Nigel Dunnett and the Caruso St John Architects practice; equally central to the life of the place is the involvement of an enthusiastic team of volunteers, the constant presence of artists and the dynamic exchanges between the various communities that animate it on a permanent or occasional basis.
