Mnemosyne is the Atlas dedicated by Aby Warburg to the study of the survival of Antiquity within Western culture. Mnemosyne is the magnum opus of a great scholar who devoted his intellectual life to the pioneering endeavour to restore “the world to the image”, devising a new a new method of research dissemination by which the visual element is emancipated from its ancillary role to language and acquires a new semantic autonomy. Mnemosyne is a conceptual object—a machine à penser, borrowing Carlo Ginzburg’s apt definition—that has profoundly influenced the cultural landscape of the past 50 years, inspiring countless artists, intellectuals, and scholars across various disciplines.
