Uno dei maggiori studiosi che ha contribuito a far conoscere l’arte cristiana etiopica è stato Stanislaw Chojnacki, recentemente scomparso. Questo volume, pubblicato postumo, è il suo ultimo lavoro che conclude un lungo processo di ricerca e di valutazione di un’espressione artistica singolare della religiosità cristiana. Le “icone portatili” o “dittici pendenti” sono un tipo di icone unico dell’Etiopia e costituiscono un’espressione particolare della venerazione delle immagini sacre, realizzate in piccolo formato per essere portate sul corpo del credente o conservate nella dimora del proprietario.
Il presente volume è il catalogo di un’importante raccolta privata di icone portatili prodotte in Etiopia dal XVI al XX secolo. La silloge studiata da Chojnacki è una delle maggiori esistenti, con pezzi di grande rarità ed interesse.

Stanislaw Chojnacki, who recently passed away, was one of the most prominent scholars of Christian Ethiopian art. His thorough investigations into this most fascinating field did contribute towards making it known and appreciated all over the world. The present work, posthumously publish, is also his last one, which brings to a conclusion a long research and evaluation process on such a typical artistic expression of ancient Christianity. Unique to Ethiopia, “Portable icons” or “hanging diptychs” feature a special chapter
in the long-standing history of the veneration of holy images in a fabulous land between Africa and the East. Being small in size, they may be worn on or kept in private houses.
The book is the catalogue of an important private collection of portable icons produced in Ethiopia from the 16th to the 20th century. The icons painstakingly described and documented by Chojnacki form one of the largest extant collections, with pieces of great interest and rareness.
